Village Cyclesport Very knowledgeable and Friendly! I went into Village Cyclesport for the first time the other day to look into a stationary trainer to do some indoor riding. The selection was great and the employee I worked with really knew his stuff and made me feel comfortable about spending $250 (which seemed to be alot until I got more info about trainers).

I brought my bike with me because I needed a little service done to the gears. The salesperson suggested I tried hooking up my bike to their display trainer so that I could get a good feel of how to get everything hooked up and ready to ride (very glad I did, as this menial task seemed to be rather difficult the first time around). He even adjusted my gears while I was testing out the trainer with my bike!

While there, I was also given a tour of their computer trainer room, which is an awesome setup!! The service guy their told me all about their open sessions and classes they offer!

I ended up leaving the shop with a Cyclops Fluid Trainer, a riser block, a nice bright orange trainer tire, and 5 1.5 hour sessions in their computer trainer fitness area.

I am very stoked to ride at the shop and get to know some of the employees, who seem to be very knowledgeable and friendly! I've been to other shops before, wandered for a while, and left before even being noticed. NOT at Village cyclesport though!

A+ for customer service here!

Iron Cycles re: Iron cycles I like this shop not just because its near my su casa but I came in to get two bikes optimized and checked out. The cat who took care of it gave sound advice and actually went out of his way to save me some buckage. I liked his non-snotty attitude and simple straightforward courtesy. All of the pretentious hipster bike snobs in Wicker/Bucktown can go ride themselves into the Chi river! Lmfao.

Joie De Velo Re: Pros and Cons The above review was posted by an unhappy former employee of the shop who quit after working for me for a few weeks. It is somewhat misleading, I think. For what it's worth, here's the truth: almost every bike in the shop is discounted significantly from MSRP and all bikes are clearly marked with the selling price that everyone pays. Our clothing is also all discounted from MSRP as are almost all shoes. We check service prices of other shops from time to time and keep our service rates on par with or lower than those at other area shops. Our typical bike sale is in the $650 range but we sell bikes that are quite a bit more expensive from time to time. We also sell bikes that start below $200. Anyone who is interested in buying a bike is encouraged to test ride it before making a decision and something like 90% of customers take test rides. We don't want folks who are not serious about a particular bike to ride it just for kicks, of course, particularly bikes with large price tags, but we frequently have potential customers take bikes with $10,000+ price tags our for demo rides if they are evaluating one of our bikes against competitors products or to confirm that they like the way the bike rides before buying.

We really do try to treat everyone well and to sell good product at fair prices. Most of my customers are much better riders than I am. I'm just happy that I don't have to go out with them and embarass myself on group rides too often.

Joie De Velo Amazing service, great shop I went here in spite of the nastiness in the last two reviews when the shop where I bought my Tri bike could not do the work I needed in time for me to take the bike with me on my winter vacation at Christmas and I am really glad I did. Not only did they do a full overhaul on my Cervelo in three days, but they charged me $40 less than the shop I bought it from wanted to do the same job. John, the service manager, is really nice and one of the best mechanics I have encountered in the Chicago area.

My experience was so good with service that I decided to give them a shot at selling me a cross bike this month. The owner, Mike, took time to go over how I planned to use the bike and did some measuring to confirm my size. He recommended a Focus CX3 even though he had bikes that would have worked in stock and had to special order the Focus bike for me. I rode it for the first time today and I love it. The price was $200 lower than Performance offered on their web site. I had talked to a couple of guys I ride with about cross bikes and they suggested Focus but I did not tell these guys about these recommendations. So I was really pleased with the way they took the time to learn what I wanted and to suggest a great bike for me rather than just pushing me toward what they had in stock. They also sold me a pair of Bont A3 shoes for $99. That price is more than $80 off retail and cheaper than I could find them anywhere on the web. Bottom line: Joie De Velo is a great shop. Go there, you won't be disappointed.

Kozy's Cyclery Pull it together Kozys Came in a few weeks ago to grab a new helmet and a couple of lights. The female salesperson was very nice and helpful. ( This is why you get a 2 Kozys otherwise it would be a 1.)

Brought my bike to the back to talk to them about removing the gears and putting on a free wheel. The guy back there was like theres nothing I can do for you because he had other bikes to work on. I told him then that I didn't need the work I just needed to know if he would be able to get the parts I needed and if I needed to switch out my wheelset....theres obviously more to what I needed then that but don't feel like getting into it on here.
The guy just gave me this look like he just had the weight of the world thrust upon him. After having to explain to a supposed expert about what I needed 20 times At this point I allready gave up and was ready to go pay for my stuff..

Nope, doesnt end there....The guy behind the counter who checked me out didnt pay any atttention to for about 5-6 minutes because he wouldn't stop talking to another associate about what they did the night before..seriously?? Apparently they were trading the weight of the world around that day cause he gave me the same "WTF are you doin in front of me look." At this point I reached my limit of customer NO-service and just paid for my stuff and left.

PS -I have many friends that ride bikes and all of them have had similar experiences but I figured I'd give it a shot. FAIL. NEVER COMING BACK HERE AGAIN.

Trek Bicycle of Downers Grove Quality Shop One of my favorite chicagoland bike shops. Solid service and a clean shop. Even though I have moved from that neighborhood I still stop in to pick up some extra parts when I'm in the area. And has anyone else noticed that this shop responds to issues in this thread? I mean what more do you want.

Rapid Transit Cycleshop Never had a problem- always good service I love Rapid Transit. As for the prices here, I have never felt "ripped off". The tubes for bikes are usually on special, like 3 for $17 or 18 or something, which is reasonable, the service here is outstanding, and the advice and mechanics are great. I actually have to go out of my way to go here, and I do so, because I value service and integrity, and they seem to have got it right. Also, they run some nice specials in the winter, which you have to just come in and ask about. Good shop and good people.

Oscar Wastyn Cycles They know their business On chance, we saw Oscar Wastyn Cycles while getting a new faucet (Faucet Guy is on the same block). Went in to inquire about wheels for a project cruiser we were building, and noticed the older Schwinns in stock, so we also asked about my husband's bike that was doored and deemed a total loss due to the fork being bent, and that size of bike not being made anymore. The very helpful, although stern looking, man at the counter told us to bring it in, since they repair things like forks and wheels, even when other's can't or don't have the knowledge or time. He was confident in his abilities and we will be going back with the bike that my hubby would love to get back on the road. I am not put off by old-school attitudes and was impressed with the knowledge and experience this shop has. We will be coming back soon to see what this shop can do for us, and I will update this review accordingly.

Rapid Transit Cycleshop Just browsing Being a little intimidated last year about getting into the biking scene, I approached this shop as I was looking for a folding bike. I wanted to see what was out there and get the feel for a few. I was helped by a nice guy who explained to me all he could about all the folding bikes they had in stock, and even let me test ride about 6 of them even though he knew I wasn't ready to buy yet. I really enjoyed the experience of trying them all and I'm glad I got to because after trying a few, I knew I didn't want them anymore. I'll stick with a full-size bike after that enlightenment. But the shop was a nice place to get that info.

Spokes SPokes Sold me a 58cm when I needed a 56. I asked if this bike was too big, they reassured me it fit me. I wasn't knowledgeable then. So I bought it. Later found it it was too big. "Basil" is a bad guy. Takes advantage of poor customers. Please don't shop here unless you're educated about bikes.

Yojimbo's Garage Re: never again Did your five years at the "best shop in the country" not afford you the opportunity to learn anything about bicycles? Marcus surely knew what he was talking about regarding chainlines and you didn't, otherwise you wouldn't have seen the need to attempt validating your knowledge of bikes with that preposterous claim about the "best (nameless) shop in the country." Get real.

Alberto's Cycles Re: not impressed : Made the mistake of not checking
: that they had handed me the size
: inner tubes I asked for. Wish I
: had. Now I get to drive (not ride)
: for an hour and a half to get what
: I asked for in exchange.

I don't know why anyone would drive their car an hour and a half just for an inner tube. How about ordering several of the right size online if you really live that far from a shop.

Village Cyclesport Re: STAY AWAY!!! I can assure our customers that this is a rare case of customer dissatisfaction and that we ALWAYS try our hardest to take care of everyone! We have been voted a TOP 100 Bike Shop in the USA twice in the last 10 years!! Stop by and test us out if you want to see for yourself!! Thank you for reading this rebuttal!!

Joie De Velo Buyer beware nvesting in a good bike is as much about the post sales support as it is the buying process. While Michael and Gavin do a good job as salesmen, their after sales support is abysmal. I bought an Ellsworth Ride bike from them in May, 2011 and it has spent as much time being "repaired" under warranty as the time I've had it to ride. The problem, a faulty Shimano gear hub, was never diagnosed by JdV and after not being able to fix the problem - blaming the manufacturer for not supporting them - they eventually unilaterally cancelled my warranty. Fortunately Ellsworth - who were shocked at JdV's attitude and more than helpful - put me in touch with Richards Bicycles in Palos Heights. They diagnosed the problem in less than a day (as contrasted to Gavin spending 3 months scratching his head and getting angry) and had it fixed expeditiously. Unfortunately, I have spent more on getting this bike fixed in terms of time and gas, than it cost and have not had it to use 50% of the time I've owned it. Bottom line - don't buy a bike from JdV - they do not honor their obligations.`

DJ's Bike Doctor Silly Hours Good luck finding the place open. I ride by there twice a day on my commute to and from work, and they have NEVER been open when I needed something.

Hours are 10-5.
Unless it's winter, in which case the hours suddenly change to 12-5.
Unless it's Wednesday.

Amazing the place stays in business.

Smart Bike Parts My favourite place for online shopping Greetings from Malaysia. It's nice to know that others feel the same as I do about Smart Bike Parts. I have been buying parts 3 times and have not experienced any problems. The price shipping fees are cheaper than other online vendor. Plus, Eric is nice guy. We chat a couple times through Google Talk, asking when can I expect the parts I ordered to arrive at my door. Thank you! 10/10

Joie De Velo Pros and Cons Bike prices are competitive,if one wants a $3,000-5,000. bike. All else is overpriced especially service. Approx hourly service rate is about $60. Business model is fashioned after the Mercedes auto dealership- the salesperson (Mike) evaluates the customer's ability to pay listed price without haggling and directs his attention to those with fat wallets; others are neglected or subjected to chest-pounding stories of delusions of grander. Profits mostly made with price-inflated add-ons, especially clothing. Mostly a vanity shop, ego driven. Interesting if one wants to see unique and unusual bikes, and admittedly the staff is knowledgeable (for what that's worth) but don't expect to test ride a bike or to be treated with much respect.
The shop is about the owner, not about customers or profit.

Armitage Bike Shop The BEST shop I have been wanting to write a review about this shop for some time.

This is a really good shop to do business with. Fair pricing (not the cheapest or the highest), great customer service, and a great line of products. The mechanics and the staff here are by far, professionals.

You are not going to get a free beer here, or wait for something to get ordered, like at other shops in the neighborhood. Just straight forward professional bike service. They don’t waste anytime when your bike comes in for repair. The price that you are quoted is the price that you pay when you pick up your bike.

All repairs are usually done by the next day. If you call them in advance you can even have it done the same day.

I relay on my bike, because it is my mode of transportation for work and pleasure. I have been stopping into this shop since early spring. I have known about this shop since over a year and did not go to it because of some of the negative reviews I had read on YELP. I’m not sure but I am going to agree with multiple Yelp reviewers that you will just have to go in and try it out for yourself.

Some of those negative reviews were written back in 2007-08. I truly believe that this shop has evolved since than.

This was especially written for you Sam, after the conversation we had about reviews on the net. People do read reviews and don’t realize all the amazing services that you have to offer your clients. Next time, you should counter the ones that you feel are inaccurate. And YES, I do think most people know the difference between a real review and having a friend write one up for them.

DJ's Bike Doctor Your best choice in Hyde Park
Wheels and Things: Finally went out of business after a long slow decline. The bad online reviews were a factor in finishing him off

TATI Cycles: Not a real bike store, a pretentious "art project" of a computer customer service rep who used to be a bike racer. Basically not open to the public

Blackstone Bike Co-Op: Excellent, and serving a very good charitable purpose. Go there for repairs. But the location further south is less convenient, and they don't have a large selection of retail items.

DJ's Bike Doctor is your straight-up neighborhood bike shop. Good prices, casual attitude, and the perennially cheerful Davy Jones himself. (Yes, that is "D.J."s real name). You will never see him in a bad mood.
