Thanks guys for solving my emergency yesterday! Not easy to find a stem to replace the one that broke on my 13 year old race bike (luckily two days before the Chicago tri, not during)

This is the best Trek shop in the city of chicago. I visited village cycle center and even turin up in evanston for the purchase of a new project one madone. michigan avenue is the only shop that allowed me to TEST RIDE a bike prior to ordering. Is it too much to ask to test ride a bike that is $3000 plus...apparently so at turin and village.
Trek michigan avenue is the only REAL trek shop in chicago...

Good Stuff - from: '' - Rating: 4/5 - 14-Feb-10
I needed some service on my full-suspension mountain bike a week back, there were several problems diagnosed, but I was thoroughly explained and shown what was wrong and the most cost/efficient route to remedy the issues at hand. Jeff was the mechanic that assisted me, and was arguably one of the most knowledgeable mechanics I have dealt with in my time in Chicago (8 years).
Given their quick and honest service, I plan on purchasing a new road bike from them in the spring.

I brought a wheel in around labor day to be trued here. I knew the wheel was in bad shape and wanted to know if it was worth it. I was given an estimate about the cost ($32.something) and told I would be called before any work would be done that exceeded that estimate and if the wheel was deemed too badly damaged they wouldn't even try.
Well, the cost did exceed it by a couple of dollars, which isn't a real big deal, but after about 150 miles of very light use the same spoke that was replaced snapped. I can't expect that they're going to fix a wheel that's beyond repair, but when they told me that they wouldn't fix it if it wasn't going to work I took their word for it.
Additionally I was kept waiting for half an hour to pick up the wheel. I showed up right when the shop opened, several people were helped who entered the store after me.
Any 1 or 2 of these would be forgivable. Bottom line is the experience really doesn't give me any reason to believe that there is any commitment to service. If you wanted to buy a bike then I'd say go for it maybe. If you want repairs, go else where.
Cycle Bikes has always been good to me, I don't know why I strayed, I won't do that again.

Great service-Great People - from: '' - Rating: 5/5 - 25-Jul-09
My recumbent had a flat nearby and I stopped to get it fixed. The mechanics were very friendly and helpful and the prices for goods and services were competitive.
I'll return fpr sure and have already recommended the store to several friends.

Spacious, organized, convenient location, BUT the selection of tools is nearly non-existent. I needed a crank-puller and was turned away.

Best Shop Downtown - from: '' - Rating: 5/5 - 27-Apr-09
My wife and I came in here about a week ago and purchased 3 bikes (one for each of us + one for our child). I am an avid rider (previously a cat 2) and my wife rides for fun/fitness. They had bikes for any type of rider and their customer service was very reassuring.
Best shop downtown...period.

Unimpressed - from: '' - Rating: 2/5 - 18-Apr-09
Bought a fairly expensive road bike here. There were problems with the gear changing mechanism that made it difficult and noisy to change wheels. They repeatedly told me the problem was actually my poor riding skills and, after giving them multiple opportunities to correct the problem, I gave up. I will now spend much moola to take this to a different shop so they can attempt to fix it. I actually believe the bike was just a lemon. No lemon law on bikes yet, unfortunately.
They're not the worst bike shop out there, but I'd never buy a bike there again.

Fantastic shop! - from: '' - Rating: 5/5 - 08-Mar-09
I just bought my first road bike last week (Trek Madone) and could not be happier with the store and the owners! I went to the store several times, and both owners, Joanne and Dennis, as well as their staff, including Nick, took all the time in the world to answer my questions and get me going. I felt no pressure at anytime to buy any particular product, which for me was the best part because I am such a novice. They were all extremely patient with me and spent a ton of time making sure I had the proper fit. I have already recommended the store to several of my cycling friends, and will definitely be back for everything I need, or even just to talk biking. I highly recommend this store!

I ride every day, year round and do a lot of my own bike maintenance. I really wanted to like this shop since I live very close to it. Sadly, I've had nothing but bad experiences with their mechanics. Nice people, mostly, sure; but bad mechanics and poor communication among the staff there. Last summer I needed some brake work. Mechanic there worked on it, but claimed the problem I was having wasn't fixable. I took it home, looked at it and solved the simple problem within 10 minutes. Thought I'd give them another chance. Recently took my bike in for other problems. Three different people there have looked at it, and they've given me three different stories about the nature of the problem. One claimed he fixed it, but he didn't. It's actually even more complicated and upsetting than I'm able to write here. I would not recommend this shop.

Good service- not so good selection - from: '' - Rating: 5/5 - 24-Jul-08
This store is very close to me, which is why I go to it when I don't feel like riding to some of the other bigger stores.
Their selection is small, and more oriented towards roadies (I'm a MTBer).
No biggie, since I buy components online anyway, but the guys who work on the bikes in the back are great to deal with. Very friendly, always willing to help, and so far they all seem very knowledgeable. If there is something I can't fix on my bike by myself- I won't hesitate to take it to these guys.
Prices seem fair as well.

Great Bike Shop! - from: '' - Rating: 5/5 - 03-Mar-08
I came in here recently to tale a look at some of the bikes that they had on sale. All of the staff members that I interacted with were very friendly and helpful. They asked what type of riding I would need the bike for and made sure that it fit me properly. I purchased the bike (which I absolutely love) at a fantastic price and walked out of there a very happy man! I also got two free tune-ups with the purchase. Paul rocks!

Helpful, Full Service - from: '' - Rating: 5/5 - 04-Jan-08
The shop is in my area, and I needed to order some parts for my bike. The helpful staff located the correct parts, ordered, and installed them quickly. I was pleased to find courteous and efficient service. I noticed they have a full range of bikes available and the prices seemed to be very competitive, if not below the other shops in the area. I will definetly consult. them when I make my next bike purchase.

This shop is great. It's super clean and has a great selection. The staff is super friendly and knowledgable. I got a new bike there this summer and love it. They set me up with all the accessories that I need and whenever I need service they are on top of it with quality work and a quick turn-around time.

I had a little crisis with a crank problem while downtown, and went looking for this shop. They were extremely nice and helpful. I chatted with Dan a while who was very supportive when I mentioned bikecargo.com. I was skeptical when I heard it was going to be a "green" store-- so many corporations have abused greenwashing at this point I can barely turn off that reaction. But I'm satisfied that they're sincere. And to clarify, it's not a "corporate" outlet, which fueled my skepticism of the "green" claim, but it's basically a second location for the owners of On the Route bike shop. It's tough to start any business, and very few shops ever open in areas not previously saturated with bike shops, so I hope everyone will give these folks some support!

New Pedals - from: '' - Rating: 4/5 - 21-Jul-07
I needed to replace the clipless pedals on my bike. They had a variety of pedals and I chose the $60 pair. The mechanics quickly changed the pedals and the cleats. After I rode on my new pedals the attendant made the loosened them a third of a turn so I could get out of them a little quicker. Good experience. Quick service.

My new local shop - from: '' - Rating: 5/5 - 23-Jun-07
I have been to this shop a couple of times and so far am very pleased with the service. One thing that I am impressed with is a 10% discount that they offer to messengers which is a huge plus for me.
Although I would never buy a bike from there (I'm anti-Trek solely based on the monopoly they have become) but for mechanical work and other random parts I will gladly be stopping by.

Great Shop! - from: '' - Rating: 5/5 - 20-Jun-07
Mark and Lee set me up on a new Gary Fisher Monona after riding several bikes in their shop. (great location for test rides just a couple blocks from the lakefront bike path in the South Loop) I was between a couple sizes and Mark was able to fit me to the correct size frame. I was out of the shop and riding my new bike in about an hour from start to finish. Nice attentive sales staff, good bike/ accessory selection, clean shop and one of their mechanics is currently working on my Big Sur mountain bike. Check 'em out!

Staying in the city for BTD and got caught in the rain on Sat 5/26. They got me in, cleaned and lubed everything, and got me out in less than an hour so we could make Wicked on time. The price was right too. Great location, people, and service and saved our weekend.

Nice staff, somewhat limited - from: '' - Rating: 3/5 - 26-May-07
Just visited the new Trek company store for the first time. Very nice sales staff, although I was surprised to see that they had some pretty important gaps in their stock. For example, the store doesn't carry the Trek 1500 - probably the most popular Trek road bike for people who want an entry-level price but also don't want Tiagra/Sora components. Accessories, clothing, etc. are of course primarily limited to Trek products and their affiliated brands. Prices are also somewhat high - when I visited, everything was priced right at MSRP whereas other Trek dealers in Chicago are giving better deals. Overall, the location is conviently close to the lakefront and the staff is friendly and helpful, but I would shop around.
