If that isn't enough for you, they're also friendly, reputable and genuine.

Best Bike Shop - from: 'Ryan' - Rating: 5/5 - 22-Jun-09
Stopped in there last week. It was busy, so i needed to wait my turn for a bit. Some other people were not as patient, which i always find to be annoying. We can't have everything right away, that's life. Anyway, the mechanic took a look at my bike and let me know what i needed to get my bike in shape and he honestly told me that it wasn't worth fixing it. I ended up buying a great single speed bike which they customized for me by adding new wheels. I really enjoyed the shop and the service. They have a bunch of stuff for all types of riders. Definitely my favorite shop; will spread the word.

Best shop, if they have what you need - from: '' - Rating: 5/5 - 28-Mar-09
Absolutely the best, fairest shop I've been to in the city. Prices are competitive, sometimes even better than the internet, plus you keep the $$ in the community. Only beef is that components/bikes tend toward the middle-low-end range. (But they'll order you whatever hi-end parts you need). Commuter accessories are plentiful and way, way better price than N. side shops.

I'll add my voice to the chorus: Irv's sells parts cheaper than anywhere else, and Henry is the nicest bike store owner you'll ever meet. He didn't bat an eye when I bought $100 worth of parts to install myself, then came back six times for advice and help. Highly, highly recommended.

I've been to many a bike shop looking for a tuneups, accessories, replacement parts, and good advice.
Today I stumbled upon IRV's and all I can say is STEALLAR!
Now I've not tuned up my Klein Attitude Comp in a good 7000 miles. Look at what IRV is charging me...
New chain + brake pads, 9 gear Shimano cassette, 4 stainless steel cables, new 50 pound rear rack install, U-Lock install, fresh grips, and side handles all for the sum of $225.00
Village Cycle Center wanted 225 for the brakes, cassette, cables, brakes, and tuneup ONLY.
Considering me a new customer FOREVER!

Worth a trip for the northsiders - from: '' - Rating: 5/5 - 04-Jun-08
Not a place for super high-end bikes, but the best shop I've been to for prices on commuter stuff and repairs. Riders from the north side should take a trip to 18th street. It really is worth it for the value you'll get. I had 2 broken spokes replaced and the wheel trued, same day, for $15! That's less than what you pay for a derailleur adjustment in Wicker Park.

What LBS should be - from: 'rob' - Rating: 5/5 - 05-May-08
I love this place. The head guy is gruff, but you can tell he's a pretty cool cat. Everyone is helpful, relaxed, without any condescending attitude many other stores have. I started biking this spring for the first time in years, and I go to irvs it seems about once a week jsut to check out stuff. You really cant beat their prices for a LBS. They seem to be always 3-4 bucks cheaper than anywhere, including many cheap websites. They dont try to rip you off (the younger guy recomended a cheap 18 dollar seat that actually was one of the most comfortable seats ive used). And they are helpful without the big sell. And they have a surprising selection of tools that are very affordable.

Best bike shop in Chicago hands down. I have been going for years even though I don't live in the neighborhood anymore. The guys are very nice, knowledgeable, and personable. Since it's family there, you get no attitude or snobbery like at other bike shops. Their parts, accessories, and tune up work is the best price around. In a word...legendary. Way to go Irvs!!

Irv's is a true neighborhood bike shop, a little kitschy, and when I walked in there was a dog gnawing on a rib, but that's why I love it. Today, I came in with a stuck derailleur. Henry took a look at my bike, chewed me out for not keeping the chain lubed, and fixed it handily in 5 min flat, free of charge. I've been to lots of other shops, but I will go out of my way to get to Irv's.

Irv's is the best shop I've been to in the City - from: '' - Rating: 5/5 - 08-Dec-07
Hands down this is the best shop I've been to in Chicago for parts and service. I took my older mtb to two different shops to have my drive train repaired after I was hit by a car. Neither shop figured out what was wrong, and my chain kept skipping under load. When I took my bike to Irv's, it took them about five minutes to figure out what was wrong. When I found out my rear hub was shot, I thought the repair would cost more than I was willing to spend. Boy was I wrong. This place has incredible prices on parts and service. I won't take any of my bikes anywhere else for service from now on.

if there's one thing i can't stand, its the bike snobs... the "too cools"... and they always seem to find jobs at bike shops... however, irv's will never give you attitude. irv's will never condescend you. irv's will never rip you off. the cats who work there are nothing but helpful, honest, and down right cool. the prices are insanely awesome. most stores on the northside, like the northside, are overpriced and overhipstered... but for those of you who can't spend a week's pay on labor for truing a rim, irv's is the place to go.

I have gone to most of the bike shops in Chicago. I only started riding when I moved to Chicago but was really into it. I had to ask a lot of questions to understand my bike and cyciling in general. A lot of the shops I went into didn't give me the time of day. I have built up 4 $1000+ bikes in my 1 year I have spent in C hicago. Henry & Ricky @ Irv's has always ordered the parts I needed, made me feel welcome, and have been respectful and understanding of the questions I asked.
As far as I am concerned, 'Irv's bike shop' should be called 'Chicago's bike shop'. It is a Shop that is there to serve everyone and answer any question.

I love the birds on the counter, the occasional dog underfoot, the comic books, and most of all, Henry and his staff. I've seen things on sale elsewhere for Irv's everyday price. Service prices are really really good, and the work is superb. But be warned, in peak of bike season I've seen lines out the door and you might not get the instant service you want. Irv's really is like getting into a time machine and going back to when customer service and character hadn't been McJobed out of us.

Irv's is so good I will go without rather than buy a bike elsewhere. I really wanted a Breezer a couple years back but bought a Raleigh Coaster instead. They have kept it perfect, fixed it quickly, treated my friends well and continue to create raving fans. I never hear anything but raves from everyone I have referred them to.
This is how to run a locally based business. I just hope that they will order the Batavus 3 Speed Personal Delivery Bike that I really want now that it is finally available in the United States, I would hate to go without.

Everybody there is friendly, they have a great selection of accessories, and YOU WILL NOT FIND BETTER PRICES THAN IRV'S ANYWHERE. They had amazing prices that beat out any other bike shop like cozy's which i had been going to previously(never will nemore after finding this gem). Staff is great and lets u know exactly what the bike needs and what it does not. I saw that they were very busy and they told me that my bike would be ready in two days, they called me the next day and said it was ready to go. They did an excellent job every thing was in top shape. I even think it worked better then when the bike was new. All in all the best bike shop out there. Recommending it to all. Keep up the great work Henry!!!!!!

I would not recommend this store to any one. I went there by seeing good reviews on this site.
The guy refused to fix the brake of my bike, saying that we don't fix brake. May be because he was too busy with big customers. I bought the parts so that I can fix it myself. He gave the wrong parts, so I ended up wasting my money and time.
I wish I could give him rating of 0, but there is no option for zero.

1) Henry, and staff, are solid. If you come in to have some kind of labor done, you'll probably walk out with some parts...meaning somehow the labor fee vanishes. They're pros, and very straightforward with what they know, and what they don't
2) Prices. Cheapest parts store in town, from the little crap to upgrades.
I've walked home with tools to borrow overnight, and had some of the most ludicrous excuses applied to give out a discount. Very nice, honest, and generally what a bike shop should be.

I waited 8 months to get my bike fixed because I had heard horrible things about the two shops in Hyde Park. I finally got my bike up to Pilsen to Irv's and was very glad I waited. They very quickly replaced my front fork that was damaged in a car accident last year and gave it a great tune-up. Real friendly guys - I highly recommend them. Hey I'm back again. Today I had been to get my front wheel rim straightened and to get some minor stuff done.
He told me beforehand that he charges around ten bucks for rim straightening. So he gets to work and tries his best but my rim being in a real bad condition after running into a sidewalk at high speed, he could not get it to perfection.(Mine is s thin tire road bike, the rim needs replacement).
Any way, he does a small tune up here and there and I buy this light also.. and when the bill came he doesn't charge any labor. Apparently he deems that the rim has not come out real good so he doesn't feel like charging me. ( God only knows the condition the rim was in previously)

I've got nothing but good things to say about Irv's. It's the kind of bike shop that's not supposed to exist anymore: neighborhood guys running a first-rate operation at reasonable prices. Personal service in a franchise world.
Irv's is about 10 blocks from our house, definitely the closest bicycle shop to us. My wife found the place when she was riding her bike to her teaching job one day (UIC) and had some problems. The guys in Irv's were so efficient and friendly that she insisted that I take my bike there, too.
It's a small thing, but I've been hampered by numbness in my hands during my daily 50km round-trip commute. I've had pricier, fancier stores like Village and Kozy range from completely blowing me off to trying to get me to buy some really expensive solution. The owner of Irv's told me to try a pair of inexpensive ergonomic grips and sure enough, it fixed the problem. This kind of personal service is what makes a shop great. They've also occasionally recommended that I NOT buy something that was wrong for me, which is the true sign of an honest merchant.
And best of all, while you're waiting for Irv's to finish with your bike, you an have some of the best Mexican and South/Central American food in Chicago right down the street.

Irv's is a dream come true -- an old-fashioned neighborhood bike shop run by a guy, Henry, who has been working there for decades. Henry has anything you need, or can get it for you pretty quickly, and he personally sees to it that all repairs are done right. I'd pay a premium for the high quality service at Irv's, but their prices are cheaper than anything you'll find elsewhere. You just can't do better than Irv's. It's a hidden treasure.

I bought a vintage bike once on Ebay and received it at my place of business. The bike shipped without pedals but I was too excited to take it home on the train so I rode it from River North to Pilsen by pushing directly on the crank arms. This was my first experience riding a fixed gear bike. Anyhow, the next morning I wanted to ride the new bike to work but had to track down some pedals in Pilsen - I went to Irv's not expecting to find anything (I assumed, wrongly, that the lowriders in the window meant they had little interest in Road Bikes). I got the pedals I needed, and bought a light, some tubes, a patch kit, and an extra tire because the prices were the extremely good and the staff was awesome. Highly recommended.

Interesting place mainly selling low-riders and BMX bikes that actually has a nice selection of accessories and (GASP!) tools. Actually, I was amazed by the tool selection: it's usually a pain to find crank pullers and the like in abundance and for sale at neighborhood shops, but they've got a display case full of 'em. If you need service for your road bike when you're in the neighborhood, these guys'll do it with quick turn around. And the prices are damn good.
